Readability, quite simply, is a quantitative measure of a display's performance in transmitting visual information to the eye - clearly, quickly and comfortably. Good readability also implies doing this job over a wide range of ambient lighting situations - from bright sunlight to total darkness.The quantitative measure of readability is called the Discrimination Index (DI). The principal contributor to the DI is the contrast between an "on" pixel and its background - both luminance contrast and chrominance contrast.
