Light Polarizing Films Improve Display Brightness by up to 218%.

DBEF Films improve display brightness in electronic devices including cell phones, notebooks, gaming stations, medical equipment, retail signature capture screens, kiosk displays and digital signage.

American Polarizers, Inc. (API), a world leader in the manufacture and distribution of polarized filters and other optical products, has added 3M DBEF Dual Brightness Enhancement Films to its product line. Along with the 3M BEF Brightness Enhancement Films already being offered, API now provides a broad range of display brightening products to help optics and display manufacturers meet most application requirements for improving display illumination.

DBEF film polarizes light emitted from a backlight. One polarization (P1) is transmitted to the display while the light from the second polarization (P2) is reflected or recycled back into the backlight. The recycled P2 light is then transmitted back to the display toward the viewer as P1 light. This compresses the display P1 light output resulting in the brightness gain.

With P2 light continually being reflected back for recycling, there is a sustained gain of P1 light and therefore the display remains significantly brighter. The overall gain in brightness is up to 60% for a slab backlight and up to 97% for a wedge light guide. In combination with other 3M BEF films, brightness improvements of 218% may be achieved depending on the backlight design.

Using recycled light to improve display brightness, as opposed to requiring the backlight to draw current, reduces power consumption. This translates into longer battery life in portable devices including cell phones and laptops. Additionally, since electronic power input is not required to brighten the backlight, heat build-up is effectively managed which keeps component parts cooler and improves device safety.

A thin, multi-layered polymer-based polarizing film, DBEF Dual Brightness Enhancement Film readily adapts to substrates, contours, and cavities. Though flexible, DBEF film has the rigidity required to remain warp-free when used with backlights. Dual Brightness Enhancement Films are non-metallic and will not interfere with electronics or WIFI.

DBEF Dual Brightness Enhancement Films improve display brightness in electronic devices including cell phones, notebooks, gaming stations, medical equipment, retail signature capture screens, kiosk displays, digital signage and essentially anywhere LCD displays are used. The films are of particular interest to design engineers in aerospace and automotive where weight, heat build-up, and power use must be minimized.

API offers the 3M DBEF films with special characteristics affecting functionality. For example, an embossed surface treatment is available which keeps the film from wetting out. Other features and options include films with a matte finish, optically clear adhesive, diffusing skins and other characteristics to help manage the film’s thermal and mechanical properties.

API adds value for customers interested in DBEF films by offering custom sized and shaped films for virtually any customer need. Technicians at API use precision cutting dies or high accuracy laser cutting equipment to fabricate the films into any shape no matter how intricate, and can also laminate DBEF films to glass or acrylic.
